We cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared for your
study abroad experience. Proper organization and planning prior to
your departure will ensure that you will have the best experience
possible.
To help you organize yourself and complete the necessary tasks
before you leave, we have introduced this Pre-Departure Guide. Please use the
sections on the left menu to view information on specific
pre-departure issues.
Additionally, below you will find a Pre-Departure Checklist
that we have prepared. We suggest that you print this page and
use it as a reference to keep track of what you have done and what you
need to do.
Meet with your academic advisor at your home institution, if you have not already done so
Meet with the Financial Aid office at your home institution, if you receive any form of grants, scholarships, or loans
Purchase tickets and inform your study abroad program sponsor of your flight arrangements
Complete all necessary enrollment forms and payments and submit to the study abroad program sponsor
Ensure you have a passport valid for at least three months past the end of the program
Submit a postal forwarding request at your campus address to forward mail to your permanent U.S. Address
Learn how to access your home institution's email account remotely
Talk to your physician
and discuss health and medication issues. Ensure you have enough
prescription medicine for the duration of the program
Start reading about your host country and city
Pack appropriate clothing and personal items
Double-check the following before departure:
Passport
Visa (when applicable)
Airline tickets
Written prescriptions or medications in original labeled containers
