The University consists of 30 colleges and 12 departments. It has 216 research institutes and research centers, 2 national engineering research centers, 81 key national disciplines, and 12 national key laboratories. Through the years, Peking University has developed into a center for teaching and research, combining various disciplines such as pure and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and sciences of management and education. Its aim is to place itself among the world's best universities. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan" - the gardens of Yan - is situated in the northeast of the Haidian District in the western suburbs of Beijing.
