Module Description: Intensive International Relations (IIR)

The Intensive International Relations (IIR) Module is a program add-on module designed for advanced International Relations students who are interested in pursuing independent academic research in addition to their academic coursework.

This program is primarily intended for students attending one of the “custom” semester programs at the University of Nicosia. Students select two International Relations courses, two additional courses of their choosing and complete a supervised independent study on a pre-approved international relations topic. Semester in Europe students can attend this module with pre-approval only.

This program has additional eligibility requirements. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and junior status at their home university. Additionally, students must have a demonstrated interest in a relevant international relations topic and be capable of conducting independent research.

Students on the Intensive International Relations program enroll in four University of Nicosia courses, of which two will typically be International Relations courses. Students also perform a semester-long independent study with the assistance of a faculty advisor from the University of Nicosia International Relations department. This study typically culminates in a research paper.

The topic of the paper should focus on an area where University of Nicosia faculty have relevant expertise such as:
  • EU and EU enlargement
  • Southeastern Mediterranean issues
  • Greco-Turkish Relations
  • the Cyprus Problem
  • bi-communal relations
  • the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

A Learning Laboratory for International Relations

Cyprus is a stable and accessible learning laboratory for students to study current issues such as EU enlargement, southeastern Mediterranean issues, Greco-Turkish relations, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The International Relations department at the University of Nicosia is exceptionally strong and has leading experts on southeastern Mediterranean international relations on its faculty. Additional Admission Requirements

Given the heavy academic nature of this program, students that would like to enroll in this program have certain additional admission requirements.
  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • At least junior status at their home university at the time of program enrollment. Graduate students are also welcome on this program.
  • Background in international relations
  • A research topic that is relevant to the University of Nicosia IR faculty
  • Demonstrated capacity for independent academic work
