Summer in the Mediterranean: Greek Heritage

Program Itinerary

The itinerary of the Summer in the Mediterranean: Greek Heritage program gives a great overiew of important sites in Greece and Cyprus. The itinerary tracks closely with the Early Christianity program, but leaves more time for language study and cultural immersion.

Cyprus, your home base, has a rich and visible cultural history. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Crusaders, Byzantines, Franks and Ottomans have all left a powerful legacy for the modern visitor to see and admire. That said, it is the only native Greek-speaking country in the world other than Greece.

Travel and Excursions in Greece and Italy

After you complete your coursework and excursions in Cyprus, we move on to Greece to visit the heart of Greek civilization.

Athens

Athens has been the most famous and important city in the Greek-speaking world for most of the last five thousand years and is so again today.

In Athens, you will:
  • Visit the Parthenon and agora where St. Paul preached
  • Visit the Athens Archaeological Museum
  • Enjoy a vibrant, energetic and modern city
Greek Islands

We also will take a four to five day cruise through the Aegean islands of Greece on a passenger cruise liner. The islands are a wonderful place to see non-urban Greek culture.

Our final island itinerary will not be known until late in the spring, but last year's itinerary was representative of the scope of the itinerary and included stops in the following islands:
  • Santorini
  • Mykonos
  • Crete
  • Kusadasi (Turkey)

Travel and Excursions in Italy

This program will also allow you to visit Rome, the successor of classical Greece.

In Rome, you will
  • Visit the Colosseum (home of gladiators) and Roman Forum
  • Visit historical Rome, including the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and Trevi fountain
  • Visit the Vatican and Vatican Museum
  • Enjoy the stunning Eternal City
