The United Kingdom is the most popular destination for study abroad students from the United States and offers a wide range of experiences. London is a bustling cosmopolitan hub, but the United Kingdom offers many opportunities to experience a slower and more traditional way of life from the rolling green hills of the British countryside to the lakes of the Scottish highlands to the ancient university towns of Oxford and Cambridge. There is a wide range of peoples, cultures and religions represented in London's large and diverse population, with over 300 languages spoken. As of 2011, the official population of London was 8.1 million.
Students can travel easily throughout London thanks to the "Tube", one of the largest and most famous subway systems in the world. London is also a great hub for inexpensively traveling to other countries as it has several major airports and
very competitive airfares, particularly throughout Europe.
Overall, London is one of the top three metropolitan environments in the world, along with New York and Tokyo, and should appeal to students searching for an intense, fastpaced experience.
