Semester in London at the School of Oriental and African Studies
Curriculum and Faculty
We can help you find suitable courses (modules) from a wide range of subjects that are taught at SOAS.
You will be direct-enrolled in modules with regular students from the School. You will be fully integrated into the academic and social life of the School. You will be able to choose from over 400 courses and build a unique program, exploring the range of specialist courses available at SOAS that may not be available in your home school. You should be capable of independent academic study, as the British academic model places more responsibility on the student to stay current with the module syllabus.
SOAS does not operate a semester system. This means that the majority of the courses are taught over the full academic year (September-June). These are called full units. However, SOAS also offer half units which are taught in either just the Fall or the Spring term.
All study abroad students, whether full year, Fall or Spring, will take 4 courses during their time at SOAS, as this is deemed equivalent to a full workload at your home school.
Fall or Spring term students will select 4 courses, which can be either full or half units. Fall students will leave their courses early, and Spring students will begin half-way in January. SOAS accepts a large number of students who only stay for one term, so it is very common not to complete a full unit course. This will not affect your assessment or credit transfer.
SOAS offers a wide range of Asian and African languages, all of which are available from beginner to advanced level. If you consider studying a language at beginners' level, then note that this is only open to students that start in September. If you start in January and wish to take a language then you must have prior knowledge of the language.
