GLS Students Visit the United Nations
On June 25, GLS students studying abroad in Cyprus on the Summer in Europe, visited the United Nations Protected Area (UNPA) in Nicosia
and had the opportunity to meet the Special Representative of the Secretary
General and Chief of Mission, Mr. Michael Moller.
The students received a warm welcome from Mr. Moller who
spoke about the political and diplomatic goals of the UN in general, in addition to the role of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. He
also referred to Cyprus’s accession to the European Union and to the
possibility of Turkey entering the EU in the future.
Lots of questions were asked by the students especially on
issues concerning the borders that divide the island and the status quo inside
the buffer zone. Mr. Moller was more than happy to answer to all of their
questions, despite the fact that his everyday schedule is overloaded and
a 40-minute constructive discussion took place between the students and the UN
Representative.
Mr. Moller also took the time to discuss his daily work as
well as his previous foreign service experience.
The students had the chance to take a group photo with Mr.
Moller and a UN officer gave the students a tour of the UN Headcourters in
Nicosia and the Old Nicosia Airport which is closed since the Turkish
invasion in 1974. At the Old Nicosia Airport the UN officer gave the students a brief historical background of the place.
The visit ended with a tour of the beautiful and
environmentally protected UN camp.
